While Disney has resurrected other failed properties (see Tron: Legacy getting a third film greenlit after a decade), the math on John Carter is fatal. Disney wrote off the film as a tax loss years ago. Furthermore, the rights to Burroughs’ later novels have become a legal labyrinth. Most importantly, Andrew Stanton has moved on, and Taylor Kitsch is now a prestige television actor ( Waco, American Assassin ).
