From a meteor shower that pelts the living room
While 2005 CGI has aged in some places (the meteor storm looks slightly dated), the hybrid effects remain impressive. The floating objects during the zero-gravity sequences were achieved with wires, harnesses, and practical rigs. The design of the Zorgon ships—barbed, insect-like creatures that latch onto the house—is genuinely creative.
Where Jumanji is a fantasy epic, Zathura is a sci-fi chamber piece. While Jumanji (the 2017 reboot) leaned into comedy and celebrity impersonations, Zathura stayed deadly serious. It respects its child audience enough to not talk down to them.
The story centers on brothers Walter (Josh Hutcherson) and Danny (Jonah Bobo), whose relationship is defined by bitter rivalry and bickering. Left home alone with their sleeping teenage sister, Lisa (Kristen Stewart), Danny discovers an antiquated, clockwork board game in their basement. REVIEW: Zathura (2005) - FictionMachine.
