As the corrupt innkeepers Thénardier, Cohen and Bonham Carter provide the only comic relief in a three-hour tragedy. “Master of the House” is a grimy, bawdy music hall number that prevents the film from becoming emotionally exhausting. Their grotesque chemistry is perfect.
