Devdas is an adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1917 Bengali novel of the same name. The movie follows the life of Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan), a charming and wealthy young man who falls in love with Paro (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), a beautiful and innocent girl from a lower social class. However, their love is forbidden, and Devdas's family and societal expectations force him to abandon Paro. Devdas then turns to a life of debauchery and becomes a regular at the local brothel, where he meets Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit).
As Devdas and Parvati are separated, they both suffer greatly, and their lives take a dramatic turn. Devdas turns to alcohol to cope with his pain, while Parvati becomes a courtesan to survive.
