Each civilization starts with a powerful, hero-like (e.g., French Coureur des Bois , Spanish Conquistador ). The Explorer cannot die (they "retreat" to the Town Center), can build Trading Posts, rescue captured treasures guarded by guardian animals/natives, and spy on the enemy.
Stone was removed. Its role in building defenses was replaced by Wood and infinite Plantations for late-game gold. This encouraged more aggressive expansion and combat over fixed gold mines.
AoE III simplified and streamlined resources compared to AoE II:
