The film follows Grace Pudel (voiced with aching sincerity by Sarah Snook— Succession ), a melancholic hoarder of ornamental snails who recounts her tumultuous life from the 1970s through the 1990s. Born a "twin" to her pyromaniac brother Gilbert (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Grace suffers a series of absurdist tragedies: her mother dies from a flying airstair, her paraplegic father (a street performer who swallows lawn darts) passes away shortly after, and she is separated from Gilbert, sent to live with a swingers couple in Canberra.
