I hesitated for only a second. Then I slipped off my blazer, my sensible trousers, my plain beige underwear. I folded them into a perfect square—because that’s what accountants do. And I lay down on the warm stone. “Then roll up your sleeves

“This is Part One,” she said, closing her eyes. “The Awakening. In three hours, you will cry. You will scream. You will feel your skin remember what joy tastes like. And then, Elena, you will only have two questions left: Who am I without my pain? And what comes next? ”

She led me deeper into the spa. We passed through a hallway lined with mirrors—but the mirrors didn’t show my reflection. They showed memories. I saw myself at twenty, laughing. At thirty-five, crying in a parked car outside my own wedding reception. At forty, staring at an empty pill bottle with numb curiosity.

I laughed. Then, I shivered. How did she know about the divorce? How did she know about the shoulder? I hadn’t told anyone, not even my therapist, that the tension had metastasized into a physical presence—a little demon that lived in my trapezius muscle.
