Following the advice of their priests and diviners, they included a guilt offering of five golden tumors and five golden mice, representing the five Philistine lords and their cities.

To determine if their misfortunes were truly from the God of Israel, the Philistines placed the Ark on a new cart pulled by two cows that had just given birth and had never been yoked. They kept the calves behind; if the cows went against their natural instinct and headed toward Israelite territory (Beth Shemesh) instead of staying with their young, the Philistines would know God was behind the plagues.

The Philistines learned this first. You cannot capture God and control Him. Many modern believers treat prayer or church attendance like the Philistines treated the Ark—as a tool to win battles. When the Ark felt uncomfortable, they tried to send it away. God is either Lord of all, or He is not Lord at all.
