INT. TOURNAMENT HALL - NIGHT Dre is losing. Cheng targets his injured leg. Dre looks at Han, who nods. Dre grits his teeth, wraps his leg around a steel pillar, and breaks his own ankle to reset the bone. The script emphasizes the crack of bone and Dre's scream. This scene does not exist in the 1984 script and was added for visceral impact.

The 2010 The Karate Kid script by Christopher Murphey follows a young boy moving to Beijing, facing bullying, and learning martial arts from a maintenance man. The final fight is brutal. Unlike Daniel’s crane kick, Dre’s victory is earned through pain. The script specifically calls for a "leg sweep counter" and a "snake-to-crane" transition. Most importantly, Murphey changes the ending: Dre does not immediately win. He is pummeled, nearly forfeits, and then finds his center. The entrance of Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) is the script’s high-wire act. Chan insisted the character not imitate Pat Morita’s Miyagi. Consequently, the script gives Han a tragic backstory absent from the first film: Han’s wife and son were killed in a car accident for which he blames himself. This scene does not exist in the 1984
