Western audiences are used to demons from Christian theology. But the Jinn are different. In Islam, Jinn are beings of smokeless fire created before humans, invisible to us unless they choose to appear. They have free will, families, and religions. However, the Marid and Ifrit types—the ones featured in Dabbe —are malevolent tricksters. The film educates you on the rules: Jinn cannot lift the Quran, they flee from the Adhan (call to prayer), and they can possess humans through unresolved trauma or cursed objects.
