This separation is not only harmful but illogical. The forces that persecute gay men, lesbians, and bisexuals are the same forces that persecute trans people: rigid gender norms. A gay man is despised because he is perceived as effeminate (a gender transgression). A trans woman is despised because she rejects male identity altogether. The fight against the gender binary is the axis upon which both communities turn.
