She wakes up not in a hospital, but on a decrepit oil tanker, the Empire , anchored miles off the coast of Barcelona. The setup is classic B-movie paranoia: quarantined at sea. The military, led by the cynical General (Paco Manzanedo) and a mysterious U.S. intelligence officer, Nick (Isak Férriz), are not interested in treating Ángela—they want the demonic parasite inside her.

The infected in REC 4 —officially called "the possessed"—are different. In REC 1 and 2 , they were rabid, intelligent, and terrifyingly fast. In Apocalypse , the biology evolves. The demon can now control rats, cause lights to flicker, and, most bizarrely, merge with marine life (a deleted subplot implied a whale-infection hybrid).
The narrative usually follows a solitary figure, often an AI or a lone survivor designated "The Archivist." Their goal is not to stop the Apocalypse—that happened in the previous installments—but to document it. The mission objective in is deceptively simple: Record the death of the species.
This is a double-edged sword.
