Films like Wiro Sableng (2018) tried to create a local superhero universe, but the real box office kings are horror ( Pengabdi Setan , KKN di Desa Penari ) and romantic comedies ( Imperfect ). Horror, in particular, leverages pesugihan (black magic for wealth) and kuntilanak (female vampire ghost) as metaphors for post-capitalist anxiety.
