Allende uses the title to ask a philosophical question: Who are the real beasts? Is it the hairy, indigenous hominid living in the trees? Or is it the white colonizer, the poacher with the machine gun, and the corporation destroying the forest for profit? The "city" is the dwelling place of these supposedly primitive beings; but the moment civilization enters, the beastly behavior begins.
