This reflects a deep-seated social issue: the policing of female bodies. In rural and urban Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi, a girl’s reputation is her family’s currency. Once that currency is devalued by virality, the consequences are often catastrophic. Reports of siswa mengundurkan diri (students dropping out of school) or pindah kota (moving cities) are common. In extreme cases, there have been suicides linked to viral shaming.
