A Chaupai is a quatrain (a verse of four lines) written in the Ardha language, a dialect of Hindi influenced by Sanskrit and Avadhi. Tulsidas ji composed the Shri Ramcharitmanas primarily in this meter. Unlike the Dohas (couplets), the Chaupais are narrative and descriptive, painting vivid pictures of Lord Ram’s life, his valor, his compassion, and the devotion of his followers.
