Unlike the primal beasts of previous seasons, Vecna was calculating, intelligent, and possessed a tragic backstory that intertwined deeply with the history of Hawkins Lab.

One of the most immediate things viewers noticed when pressing play on was the palpable shift in atmosphere. The showrunners, the Duffer Brothers, made a conscious decision to lean into the horror genre. While previous seasons had elements of Spielbergian wonder and 80s adventure, Season 4 felt more like a slasher flick, drawing heavy inspiration from the works of Wes Craven and Clive Barker.
