The single most effective trick for a fall film is backlighting the leaves. Position your subject with the sun behind them. Then, expose for the leaves above their head. The sun will shine through the thin membrane of the maple leaf, creating a stained-glass effect of pure orange and gold. The subject becomes a silhouette or a rim-lit figure.
