V1.03.70409 ^new^: Diablo Ii- Resurrected
This was a content patch. There were no new runewords (like Mosaic or Metamorphosis introduced later in 2023), no skill rebalances, and no nerfs to Hammerdins. Instead, 1.03.70409 focused entirely on the "plumbing" of the game: network code, save data integrity, and the bridge between the old 2D engine and the new 3D rendering pipeline.
The patches immediately following launch were emergency triage. However, version 1.03 (specifically build 70409 on consoles and PC) represented a transition from "emergency fixes" to "gameplay refinement." Released in late 2021, this version was the culmination of weeks of backend overhauls intended to stabilize the online experience. For many players, this was the first time the game felt reliably playable for extended sessions, marking the end of the "always offline" necessity and the return of a thriving economy. Technically, TCP/IP was removed in a preceding hotfix, but 1.03.70409 finalized the code deletion. While purists mourned the loss of direct peer-to-peer, the patch replaced it with much more robust "Offline LAN emulation" via Battle.net. This ensured that modded single-player characters no longer corrupted when attempting multiplayer workarounds. This was a content patch
