While the video transfer was generally praised for vibrant colors — particularly the Smurfs’ blue skin against the gray Manhattan streets — some critics noted that the DVD’s standard definition compression introduced minor artifacting in fast-moving CGI sequences. However, for the average family audience, the quality was more than acceptable.

The 2011 DVD became a staple of library collections and bargain bins for years. In 2013, following the release of The Smurfs 2 , Sony reissued the original film on DVD as a (though the extended cut was only on Blu-ray, causing some consumer confusion). A 2017 “10th Anniversary” reprint (premature, as it was the 6th anniversary) repackaged the same disc with new cover art featuring both films.
