Firmware is the low-level software embedded on the drive’s printed circuit board (PCB) and reserved Service Area (SA) on the platters. It controls everything from spindle motor speed to head positioning and bad sector remapping. When this firmware becomes corrupt due to sudden power loss, bad sectors in the SA, or electrical spikes, the drive becomes a brick.
