When he drops it in terror, the staff turns into a writhing serpent. Zipporah, who has followed him, watches in horror. Moses, recalling the magic of Egypt’s magicians, hesitates. But a voice (not yet fully revealed as God’s) commands him: “Take it by the tail.”
