The directors knew they needed a performer with immense range and energy. They initially toyed with the idea of John Candy or Steve Martin, but Williams was the dream. To convince him, animator Eric Goldberg sent Williams a test animation of the Genie doing his stand-up routine. Williams was enchanted, signing on for the role under specific conditions regarding the use of his likeness and the prominence of his other films in marketing (a saga that would later lead to a public falling out between the actor and the studio).
Without this roster, Aladdin is just a boy and a lamp. With them, it’s a masterpiece.
