The video codec. x264 is an open-source library for encoding H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video. It remains the gold standard for compatibility. Unlike newer codecs (x265/HEVC or AV1), x264 plays on virtually every device made after 2008, from smart TVs to old laptops. It offers excellent compression with minimal quality loss.
