Don't use the whole file. If you download a 3-minute ballad , copy just the 4-bar chorus chord progression. Paste that into your new beat. Cut out the bass notes. Reverse the melody. Treat the MIDI file as raw clay, not a finished sculpture.
Most free MIDI files are perfectly snapped to the grid (quantized). Humans don't play like that. Go into your piano roll, select all the notes, and apply a "Humanize" or "Random Velocity" function.
