Downton Abbey — Series

World War I was a watershed moment for the series. The grand house was turned into a convalescent home for officers, forcing the worlds of upstairs and downstairs to collide. The war claimed the life of the footman William Mason, who died of pneumonia, and left the valet Mr. Bates (Brendan Coyle) with a permanent limp. These episodes stripped away the glamour of the aristocracy, exposing the vulnerability of a class system that seemed increasingly irrelevant in the face of mechanized warfare.

The series begins in 1912, immediately after the sinking of the Titanic. The tragedy sets the plot in motion: the heir to the estate perishes with the ship, forcing the family to navigate a succession crisis. Chief among them is Dame Maggie Smith as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess. With her razor-sharp wit and withering put-downs ("What is a weekend?"), the Dowager became the show’s breakout character. She represented the old guard, often clashing with the progressive American sensibilities of her daughter-in-law, Cora (Elizabeth McGovern). The actual Highclere Castle in Hampshire stood in for Downton Abbey. The Downton Abbey series spent a fortune on costumes and set design. The audience could feel the weight of the silk dresses and hear the crunch of the gravel driveway. This authenticity created escapism of the highest order. Bates (Brendan Coyle) with a permanent limp
