The film centers around Shoya Ishida, a high school student who in elementary school, mercilessly bullied a deaf classmate named Shoko Nishimiya. Shoko's kindness and gentle nature only seemed to fuel Shoya's cruel behavior, earning him the scorn and ostracism of his peers. However, as Shoya enters high school, he begins to realize the gravity of his past actions and sets out to make amends.
