Long before the term "body positivity" entered mainstream lexicon, Amrita Singh’s Roma was a revolutionary character. She is acutely aware of her size. In one gut-wrenching scene, she refuses to try on a dress for her sister’s wedding, muttering, "Iske liye toh mujhe do kapde silne padenge." (I would need two pieces of cloth to cover myself.)

Rita is not a villain. She is a victim of her own immaturity. Juhi Chawla plays her with such innocence that you cannot hate her; you pity her. The film suggests that a marriage built on shallow attraction (dancing, romance, physical looks) crumbles when faced with real adversity. It is a bitter pill to swallow.

produced by Yash Raj Films. It is widely regarded as a benchmark for sibling-rivalry dramas in Bollywood.
