On Stranger Tides is the franchise’s “bridge” movie. It neither recaptures the lightning-in-a-bottle magic of The Curse of the Black Pearl nor matches the ambitious scope of its sequels. With McShane’s menacing Blackbeard, Rush’s scene-stealing Barbossa, and a leaner plot, the film proved that Captain Jack Sparrow could still carry a ship on his own.
