The IXB can be upgraded to the IXC (not a separate boat in vanilla, but a later model with minor improvements) and eventually to the IXD2 (a longer-range variant with even more torpedoes). However, the IXB is generally considered the sweet spot of the Type IX family—the IXD2 is almost too large to handle.
