The Neocatechumenal Way (Caminho Neocatecumenal, in Spanish) is one of the most dynamic—and sometimes controversial—movements within the Catholic Church. Founded in Madrid in 1964 by Spanish artist Francisco "Kiko" Argüello and Carmen Hernández, it was officially approved by the Holy See as an "itinerary of Catholic formation" for our modern, secularized world.

The community is officially "closed" as a formation group and becomes a "stable Neocatechumenal community" that will meet for the rest of its members’ lives, celebrating the "Mass of the Neocatechumenal Way" every Sunday evening with the Post-Sanctus and the breaking of the bread in small groups. For several months, candidates (non-baptized or baptized but un-evangelized) gather weekly. They do not study doctrine yet. Instead, a team of catechists proclaims the basic Kerygma : God loves you; you are a sinner; Christ died for you; He rose from the dead.
