In 2018, Darksiders III finally arrived, developed by Gunfire Games (ex-Vigil employees). By this time, the industry had learned (slightly). The game used Denuvo, a notoriously tough DRM.
On launch day, the authentication servers—run by a third-party company—collapsed under legitimate traffic. Thousands of paying customers who had pre-ordered the game were greeted with a screen saying: “Failed to authenticate. Please check your internet connection.”
