Born on November 7, 1929, in Vienna, Austria, Eric Kandel was exposed to the vibrant cultural and intellectual landscape of pre-war Vienna. His family, being Jewish, was forced to flee Austria in 1939 to escape the Nazi regime. They eventually settled in New York City, where Kandel developed a passion for science and medicine. He attended the City College of New York, where he earned his undergraduate degree in physiology in 1950. Kandel then pursued his medical degree at New York University School of Medicine, graduating in 1953.
