Transcription is the process by which the information stored in DNA is copied into a complementary RNA molecule. This process occurs in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells and in the cytoplasm of prokaryotic cells. During transcription, an enzyme called RNA polymerase reads the template DNA strand and matches the incoming nucleotides to the base pairing rules (A-T and G-C).
