The hero, “Thansanga” (a nod to a common Mizo name meaning “brave companion”), returns to Zokhawthar after a failed attempt to reach the Chin State capital, Hakha. He discovers that the military junta has placed a bounty on his head. Instead of fleeing, he teams up with a rag-tag group of refugees, a retired Mizo rifleman, and a mysterious woman who runs a tuai (betel nut) stall.
