Orcas and belugas have been seen carrying their dead calves for days or even weeks. In 2018, a female orca named Tahlequah carried her dead calf for 17 days across 1,000 miles of ocean. This behavior is not "useful" in a survival sense; it is costly and dangerous. It is, by our definition, grief. These observations force us to reconsider whether consciousness and emotion are biological traits shared across mammals, rather than human inventions.
