The game puts players in the shoes of Thomas "Tommy" Angelo, a taxi driver turned mafioso in the fictional city of Lost Heaven (modeled after Chicago and New York during the 1930s). Unlike the arcade-style chaos of the Grand Theft Auto series, Mafia was lauded for its realism. Cars handled with the weight and sluggishness of 1930s machinery. Police would ticket players for speeding or running red lights. The narrative was a tragic, cinematic journey through the rise and fall of the Salieri crime family.
