This is the crown jewel of the set. Running nearly three hours, this version includes an alternative opening sequence on Earth. We see a dystopian future where Jake Sully is navigating a smog-choked, Blade Runner-esque city. We see him in a bar fight, defending a woman, establishing his character as a man of principle broken by a system that doesn't care about him. This scene—often referred to by fans as the "Earth opening"—provides crucial motivation for why Jake eventually chooses to fight for Pandora. It transforms the film from a simple adventure story into a tale of a man finding his soul.
