In this initial release, the stakes are exceptionally high. You play as a "god" guiding a child named through a dying, sunless world. The game establishes a unique meta-relationship between the player and the software, often interacting directly with your operating system.
The freeware version has two endings. One is easy. One is heartbreaking. Unlike modern games, there is no "New Game+" button. To get the true ending, you have to uninstall and reinstall —or simply carry the guilt of your first playthrough forever.
The most defining (and terrifying) feature of the 2014 version is its literal interpretation of the title: Unlike the paid version, if you close the game window outside of specific "beds," the game considers Niko "lost," and you are permanently locked out of that save file.
