The catalyst for the story's beginning is the arrival of a mysterious transfer student, Shuya Gouenji. He is the antithesis of Endou—quiet, brooding, and seemingly uninterested in soccer. However, Endou spots him practicing a powerful shot on his own and realizes Gouenji is a prodigy.
