Unlike anatomical photographs, which can be chaotic, messy, and difficult to interpret due to fat, blood, and tissue textures, Netter’s illustrations are didactic. He idealized structures slightly to make them clearer. He removed visual "noise" to highlight relationships between muscles, nerves, and vessels. When you look at a Netter illustration, you are seeing anatomy as the mind needs to understand it, not necessarily as it appears in a dissection lab.
