Midi 2 — Style
MIDI 2.0 is the first major update to the MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) protocol since its inception in 1983. Announced in January 2020 by the MIDI Manufacturers Association (MMA) and the Association of Musical Electronics Industry (AMEI), MIDI 2.0 introduces bidirectional communication, higher resolution, greater expressiveness, and automatic device configuration. It is designed to be fully backward compatible with classic MIDI 1.0 devices while enabling a new class of “MIDI 2 style” instruments, controllers, and software that feel more responsive, nuanced, and intelligent.
Of course, the "MIDI 2 Style" is currently a luxury. The industry is in a transitional phase. While the MIDI Association has ratified the standards, the hardware ecosystem is still catching up. Many producers still rely on the "MIDI 1 Style" midi 2 style
| Limitation | Description | |------------|-------------| | | 7-bit values (0–127) for velocity, pitch bend, control changes. | | Low speed | 31.25 kbps serial, leading to latency with many messages. | | Unidirectional | No way for a device to know capabilities of connected gear. | | No per-note expression | Pitch bend and aftertouch apply to all notes or require complex workarounds. | | No timestamping | Jitter in message timing. | | Manual setup | Users must manually assign channels, CCs, and program changes. | MIDI 2
