The Lao script itself is a Brahmic script, historically derived from Khmer and closely related to Thai. It consists of 33 consonants, 28 vowels, and 4 tone marks. Unlike the blocky structure of Latin scripts, Lao is curvilinear; it flows. The challenge for type designers is maintaining this flow while ensuring the text remains legible at small sizes on digital screens.
It features a clean, "loopless" or modern design, which deviates from traditional Lao calligraphy that often includes loops at the start of character strokes.
